What Age Should a Puppy Leave Its Mother?

In the excitement of getting a puppy, it can be tempting to want them as young as possible. But for the puppy’s health and development, earlier isn’t better.

The ideal age for a puppy to leave its mother is 6-8 weeks. By this time, puppies are usually weaned, have started basic socialization with their littermates, and are emotionally more prepared to bond with humans. Leaving earlier than this can lead to behavioral issues like anxiety, biting, or difficulty adjusting to new environments. (Per USDA legal guidelines a puppy must be 8 weeks before they can be released, this is important to know before purchasing)

Why 8 Weeks Is Best

  • Better emotional regulation and bite inhibition
  • Stronger immune systems after early vaccines
  • Lower risk of anxiety and separation issues

Puppies Taken Too Early May:

  • Nip or bite more often
  • Struggle with confidence and trust
  • Be more fearful or destructive

Some breeders may even wait until 10–12 weeks, especially for smaller or more delicate breeds. Be wary of anyone offering puppies at 6 weeks or younger — it’s a sign of inexperience or disregard for the puppy’s development and is illegal per USDA guidelines.

Waiting those extra couple of weeks may feel hard, but it gives your new pup the best start possible.
